3 Things to do in Central Texas This Summer

Summer time is finally upon us. The kids are out of school, the wildflowers are in bloom, and the prairies and plains region of Central Texas is just beckoning you to come visit and explore all of the many adventures you cannot miss this summer. No matter how disparate your family’s interests, there is such a variety of things to do in Central Texas, everyone in the family will go home happy. Here are the events:

National Fishing Day

While Athens is a town you may have never heard of, their recreational facilities and green zones are impeccable. This is lead by the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, which includes a freshwater aquarium (be sure to go see the alligators!) and several freshwater fishing ponds. On June 7th, the whole family can enjoy free fishing along with complimentary hot dogs and refreshments. There is also a fishing tournament for children twelve or younger. For a great father/kid get away, this is a great opportunity to build memories.

CAF Air Show

The Commemorative Air Force  (CAF) hosts an annual air show, held on the grounds of the Corsicana Municipal Airport the second Saturday in May. The show includes a variety of aerobatic and pyrotechnic demonstrations, and the show’s highlight includes the Corsicana Coyote Squadron’s aerobatic demonstration. Your family will be amazed at the completely-restored World War II airplanes, including a fully-restored PT-19, as they soar through the air, performing death-defying stunts.

 Daffy
Art

If your interests are more refined, the art and history museums are one of the most renowned things to do in Central Texas. The Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth has a small but impressive collection of modern pieces. Beyond the art, the building itself is a piece of art. The Japanese architect who designed the structure was inspired by swans gliding on water. Right across the street is the Kimball Art Museum, another impeccably-designed building, which has a special exhibit this summer on Samurai Armor. These museums make for a great Central Texas road trip.
